I'm on a Z390 ROG Strix Gaming-F mobo and i'm using motherboard audio right now. And when my current Audio I/O is 6CH speaker, then the headset "sort of has" surround effect but because it wasn't designed for surround, its flawed and some sounds will be non-distinguishable because there are only 2 speakers on a headset and PC thinks there are 6 speakers, the headset speakers count as side speakers. I've been having an issue where the Realtek Audio Console recognizes my Logitech G Pro Wired Headset as a speaker. But for example, when my current Audio I/O choice is headset, then my 5+1 surround system doesn't have surround effect.
